Meaning 'Big Eye' in Khoi, it is not certain whether the original inhabitants referred to the permanent fountain in the hills near the Roman Catholic Mission Station or the wide view one has from Tierberg. About 50km south-west of Upington and close to the Orange River, Keimoes is a centre for the cultivation of peaches, grapes (for both wine and raisins), watermelons, pecan nuts and lucerne. It has a 'bakkiespomp'" or waterwheel, symbol of the area's fertility, turning in a canal beside the main street.
