Geography: Upington, on the banks of the Orange River, is the gateway to the Kalahari Desert. It is situated on the main road to Namibia, and is centrally located on the Kalahari-Namaqua Route serving as an alternative stopover on the Johannesburg to Cape Town route.
History: Upington was established when the Olyfenhoutsdrift Mission Station unified with the Upington police station in 1871. It grew rapidly after irrigation canals were built and farmers could cultivate the land and grow fruit, fodder and grains. It was named after the first Attorney General of the Cape, Sir Thomas Upington, and today is the commercial and educational centre of the Green Kalahari.
Arts and Culture: The Kalahari-Orange Museum is housed in the original mission building and includes exhibits that focus on the pioneering history of the town. Just outside the museum is a life-size bronze donkey, a monument to the role the donkey played in the development of the region. The statue of the camel and rider at the police station commemorates both the mounties and their mounts who used to patrol the region. Other points of cultural interest include the grave of Scotty Smith, the legendary Robin Hood-like character of the town. Historically important buildings include the Roman Catholic Church built in the 1880's and the Dutch Reformed Church built in 1911.
Science and Nature: The lush green town is in sharp contrast to the surrounding southern Kalahari. It is the largest town near the Augrabies Falls National Park, and is a gateway to other natural wonders like the Fish River Canyon, Ai Ais Spa and the Boegoeberg Dam. The natural treasures of the area include precious and semi-precious stones such as beryl, amethyst, tourmaline, agate, rose quartz and jasper. Visitors will enjoy the Spitskop Nature Reserve that lies 13km north of Upington. It is home to such species as zebra, ostrich, eland, hartebeest and many others. Travellers will see the attractive kilometre-long Date Palm Avenue at the entrance to Die Eiland Holiday Resort which has been proclaimed a provincial heritage site.
Entertainment: Visitors can enjoy a trip to Orange River Wine Cellars, while tours of the large South African Dried Fruit Co-Operative where freshly packed dried fruit can be bought are offered.
Sport: For those travellers who are golfing enthusiasts, the 18-hole golf course will prove to be challenging and enjoyable. Hunting, fishing, boating, and waterskiing can be enjoyed at various venues in and around the town.
Did You Know? Upington is the hottest town in South Africa and in the height of summer temperatures often rise to over 40 degrees.
