The tiny mountain kingdom of Lesotho, with its mountain scenery reminiscent of that of Nepal or Tibet, is totally surrounded by South Africa. The Maluti Mountains are like a spine running through the country, which is located 1,000m above sea level. Owing to the abundance of water in the country, the Highlands Water Scheme on the Senqu (Orange) River was developed to pipe water to the dry industrial parts of South Africa. Visitors to Lesotho can enjoy spectacular scenery, which is often best seen from the back of a pony, as it takes you through the mountains. Hiking and fishing are also very popular and the accommodation ranges from camping to casino resorts. The national currency is Loti.
