Other Accommodation in Windhoek Namibia

Geography: Windhoek is Namibia's capital city and lies in the heart of the Central Highlands in an airy basin surrounded by rolling mountains.

History: Windhoek, or windy corner, is a corruption of the name Winterhoek, which was given to the area in 1840 by a South African farmer Jan Jonker.

Arts and Culture: It has a combination of innovative modern constructions and old German colonial buildings. In the centre of town is a pedestrian walkway with shops and market stalls, whose wares are displayed on the ground. Several cafes in this area make for great 'people-watching' and there is such diversity that you can sit there all day. Visitors interested in the historical, and cultural history of the town can enjoy the fascinating exhibits and displays at the National Museum of Namibia.

Science and Nature: It gets quite hot between December and February, but owing to its high altitude, humidity is low and nights are pleasantly cooled by a light breeze. It does rain quite heavily in summer but the evaporation rate is extremely high and as such does not stay damp for long. Winters however, can get very cold at night with some frost in low-lying areas, but the days are warm, sunny and cloudless.

Entertainment: As capital cities go, this is one of the safest and most relaxed in Southern Africa and a perfect place to start or finish a Namibian holiday.

Sport: Travellers who brought their clubs with them can have a round of golf at the exclusive Windhoek Country Club Resort. Other sporting facilities include football fields, basketball courts, netball and tennis courts.

Did You Know? Windhoek is home to Namibia's brewing industry, and many of South Africa's imported brands hail from here.
