Just 10 minutes' north of Port Alfred, the quaint village of Bathurst has a very English feel. It was laid out in 1820 as the administrative capital of Albany province but, eventually, this honour went to Grahamstown leaving Bathurst as a small village.
It now has a number of interesting places to visit, most with a strong 1820 British Settler slant. The agricultural museum is full of early agricultural and household artefacts, the old Anglican church (1838) was used as a shelter for Settlers during the Frontier Wars, the Methodist church houses the bible of that famous Settler, Jeremiah Goldswain. The beacon from where 57 Settler farms were allocated is now a Toposcope with a 360-degree view. Its stone walls were made from derelict Settler cottages. South Africa's first wool mill, built by Samuel Bradshaw in 1821, still stands and has a working watermill. South of the village there is an attractive viewsite of the horseshoe bend in the Kowie River below, and beyond the lookout is the beautiful Waters Meeting Nature Reserve picnic spot, at the river's edge. Craft shops and a herb garden are favourites with visitors as are the local pubs, early Settler architecture and The Big Pineapple where tractor/trailer rides are offered around the pineapple plantations.
