Geography: The 'Gem of the Karoo' is found along the N9 highway between Middelburg and Aberdeen, and lies cradled in a natural curve of the Sundays River.
History: Graaff-Reinet was established in 1786, and as such is one of South Africa's oldest towns. Its centre is still historically intact and the fascinating old architecture makes it a beautiful and charming town to explore. Named after the resident Cape Governor and his wife of the time, the town has an interesting history as it was first an administrative hub for the area and later becoming South Africa's first Boer Republic (although short-lived)! One of the town's most famous sons is the late Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, founder of the Pan African Congress (PAC), which he formed as a breakaway group after being disillusioned with the policies of the ANC. When he died in 1978, five thousand mourners attended his funeral in Graaff-Reinet.
Arts and Culture: The town is elegantly laid out around the 1886 Dutch Reformed Church, and is chock full of national heritage sites. In fact, there are 220, and no other South African town has as many. The Town Hall on Church Street, opened in 1911, is a wonderful example of Victorian-style architecture, while Reinet House built by the French architect Louis Thiebault is a fine specimen of the Cape Dutch style. The Reinet Museum, found within the Reinet House, holds some fine period furniture and interesting old photographs. The beautiful Drostdy, also designed by Thiebault, was originally the home of the magistrate but today serves as a hotel and restaurant. Visitors to Graaff-Reinet will be spoilt for choice when it comes to perusing beautiful museums and monuments. More information on these can be found at the Tourism Information Office in the main Drostdy building.
Science and Nature: The 16,000ha Karoo Nature Reserve surrounds the town and is home to the Valley of Desolation, which features an arrangement of 200-million year old dolerite columns - some of which rise 120m above the valley floor. At the southern entrance to Graaff-Reinet visitors will see Spandau Kop, a 1,400m hill with a distinct summit.
Entertainment: Graaff-Reinet has many good restaurants and tearooms as well as standard shopping outlets.
Sport: There are walks and hikes that can be embarked upon from inside the Karoo Nature Reserve that are ideal for game spotting and bird-watching.
Did you know? Graaff-Reinet is the only South African town that is completely surrounded by a nature reserve.
