Geography: The town of Stutterheim, with its wattle and pine plantations, is situated 80km inland from East London off the N6.
History: The town is named after Major-General Baron Richard von Stutterheim, a soldier who supervised the King's German Legion in the eighth frontier war of 1850-53. Many of the soldiers that stayed on after the war became adept at farming, and the town developed into a strong agricultural centre. The Bethel Mission where many of the families settled was established in 1837.
Arts & Culture: There are many places of cultural and historic interest in Stutterheim that visitors will find intriguing. Some of these include the Old Lock Up as well as the restored Post House which is now a shopping complex. At the Bethel Church you can see the Bell of the Lutheran Berlin Mission Station and the grave of the Xhosa warrior chief Sandile. If you are looking for an authentic look at Xhosa life, the Mgwali Cultural Village 25km out of Stutterheim will organise a tour for six or more people. Here you will find stunning scenery, alive with the rich and vibrant colours of the traditional Xhosa people.
Science and Nature: The town receives between 500 and 900mm of rain a year and as such is brilliant forest country. Many plantations of exotic species now line the slopes of the Amatole Mountains.
Entertainment: The scenic forest area of the slopes of the Kologha Mountain, a spur off the Amatole, provides wonderful opportunities for walks, hikes and scenic drives.
Sport: Fishing and water sports prove to be very popular in Stutterheim and international trout fishing competitions are hosted here every year. At the Wriggleswade Dam, anglers will enjoy the bass fishing, while trout can be fished at the Gubu Dam. The dams are also ideal for windsurfing and boating.
Did you know? Xhosa is spoken by approximately 7.9million speakers - a figure which is about 18% of all South Africans.
