Geography: Situated halfway on the N3 route between Gauteng and the KwaZulu-Natal Coast, Harrismith with its spectacular backdrop of the Plateberg is an ideal stopover or weekend getaway.
History: Established in 1849 and named after the British Governor, Sir Harry Smith, the town was initially laid out by Robert Moffat about 25km from the present location. This site unfortunately proved to be deficient in water and Harrismith was shifted to its present site in January 1850! Twenty-four years later it became a municipality and during the diamond rush at Kimberley, the town became a busy staging post on the Natal transport route. As a direct result of this, hotels, stores and public buildings sprang up. Harrismith was a major base during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War and visitors can see the numerous battle sites, blockhouses and a military cemetery that are evidence of this. Today, Harrismith is the commercial and industrial centre for one of South Africa's five most important wool-producing areas and is a charming, spacious town.
Arts and Culture: There are quite a few cultural sites to keep the traveller with an interest in history and art busy. The oldest house in Harrismith dates back to 1857 and is located at 78 Warden Street, while the famous little corrugated iron house is a relic from the South African (Anglo-Boer) War. There is also a small community museum in the Market Hall at the back of the Town Hall, which has interesting exhibits on the history of the town. Visitors can also see various war memorials, a hitching post and an Orange River Colony red post box that is still in use today.
Science and Nature: The town is noted for its 30m-high petrified tree which is about 250-million years old. It can be seen in the Debora Retief Garden next to the 1907 Town Hall, which is in fact a provincial heritage site. About 15km from Harrismith is the Sterkfontein Dam surrounded by 18,000ha of nature reserve. The water supply from the dam is often directed into the Wilge, and then into the Vaal River when water in Gauteng is needed.
Entertainment: Harrismith is a wonderful place to visit for the weekend, but if you only have a day then there is still plenty to see and do. Some activities include a visit to the Royal Natal Park, the base of the Drakensberg Sentinel or driving out to the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. A real gem is the Basotho Cultural Village, which offers both a Sotho and Zulu cultural experience and visitors can experience the taverns, schools, spaza shops, the processes of the sangomas and traditional healers, and take in all the local culture. The Harrismith Wildflower Gardens, founded in 1967 contain about 20<\#37> of the Drakensberg region's flora and are great to wander through and take in the fresh air.
Sport: The famous annual Berg Marathon, held in October, is one of the most prestigious cross-country running events in Southern Africa. Yet it owes its origin to a quirky event. The race began when ex-British Army Major Belcher irritated locals by referring to the Platberg as "That little hill of yours". One of the locals took exception to this and bet him that he couldn't reach the top in under an hour. Needless to say he did, but only with eight minutes to spare. The gracious winner donated a floating trophy to the first person to reach the top in a race every year. Today's athletes get to the top and back down again, easily in his time! Harrismith offers more sport than just the race however. Golfers can enjoy one of South Africa's oldest 18-hole courses, while at the country club bowls is offered. For the outdoor enthusiast there are activities that include birding, biking, 4x4, hiking, climbing and water sport!
Did You Know? The Zulu name for the area is Intabazwe which means "place of the mountain".
