Geography: The pretty and tranquil Free State town of Smithfield is centrally located on numerous tourist routes. It is roughly halfway between Cape Town and Durban and about 550km from Johannesburg and lies 132km southeast of Bloemfontein on the national road to Port Elizabeth.

History: Smithfield was named in honour of Sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape Colony at the time, who laid the foundation stone for the local church in 1848. It is similar to Harrismith in that it has the oddity of being a town that had to move from its original location. The original site for the township was chosen to be Waterval Farm, but when the plots went on sale there were no takers. The local farmers knew there was a shortage of water at this location and preferred Rietpoort, 24 km to the east. Smithfield happens to be the third oldest town in the Free State.

Arts and Culture: Visitors can view wonderful examples of San rock art in the hills near the town while the more modern culture of the town is chronicled at the Caledon River Museum. The house on the farm Leeukop is where the Boer guerrilla fighter General Christiaan de Wet was born and has been proclaimed a provincial heritage site. In front of the magistrate's office visitors can see "Ou Grietjie," a cannon used by the Free State in the Basuto wars. Unfortunately, when the cannon was brought to Smithfield, two men were killed when they stared down the barrel trying to see why the gun wouldn't fire. Needless to say, the powder ignited and killed them instantly.

Science and Nature: Visitors can enjoy the outdoors at Wilgegund Nature Reserve Conservancy and keep busy with horse-riding, walking and picnicking.

Entertainment: There are numerous activities in Smithfield to keep visitors occupied. Some of the outdoor entertainment includes game drives, bird-watching and hiking trails.

Sport: Visitors can hire bicycles, grab a map from the Deli in town and explore the ins and outs of Smithfield. Those who enjoy horse-riding can book a ride through the Lehlaka Equestrian Centre.

Did You Know? A Late Stone Age culture was named after Smithfield when excavations near the town uncovered some important artefacts and primitive tools.
