Geography: At the end of the Highlands Route on the R26 lies pretty little Zastron. The town is about 25km from the Lesotho border in the extreme southeastern corner of the Free State.

History: Zastron was originally laid out in 1876 on Jan Hendrik de Winnaar's farm Verliesfontein. It bears the name of Ms Johanna Sibella Zastron, the wife of JH Brand, President of the Orange Free State Republic from 1864 to 1888 and became a municipality in 1881. The original town inhabitants led a dangerous existence as the Basotho, Voortrekkers and San were continually contesting the no man's land surrounding the town. Today Zastron is the commercial centre for cattle, sheep, dairy, maize and wheat farming.

Arts & Culture: The excellent examples of San rock art found in the mountains around Zastron show that the presence of the San in this area predates the arrival of the Basotho and the Voortrekkers. This early culture was also fascinated with the beauty of the mountainous region and the art found in a cave at Glen Rosa Farm features a 5m-high, perfectly preserved polychrome San frieze. It is one of the world's most important pieces of historical artwork. Other examples of great San art can be found at The Cave of the Hippopotamus, so named because of the high prevalence of hippo drawings in the art, while pot shards, cooking implements and other relics can also be seen at the site. In the town itself, visitors can see monuments and memorials that relate to the town's history. One of these is the South African (Anglo-Boer) War Memorial that stands in front of the Dutch Reformed Church.

Science & Nature: The spectacular mountains of the Eastern Free State are in sharp contrast with the flat plains in the rest of the province and the area is characterised by spectacular sandstone formations. Local legends abound about the curious formation known as the "Eye of Zastron", a 9m hole in a sandstone rampart in the Aasvo<\#235>lberge. The Aasvo<\#235>lberge dominates Zastron's eastern horizon and the Vechtkop, named after an historic battlesite, is the highest peak in the Free State. It is 2 072m high. The mountains are also home to a colony of the scarce Cape Vulture.

Entertainment: There is much to do for the outdoor enthusiast. At the Mayaputi Nature Reserve, travellers go game and birdwatching, take an outride on a horse, challenge themselves with river rafting or tackle a 4x4 route. The Eeufeeskloof Dam is a trout fisherman's paradise, while a trip to the Hoogland Outdoor Centre will be great for the entire family, where more about the natural environment can be learned.

Sport: For the energetic traveller the Aasvo<\#235>lberge Hiking Trail will prove to be challenging yet full of rewarding scenes of the indigenous flora and fauna.

Did you know? Translated directly from Afrikaans, Aasvo<\#235>lberge means "mountain of Vultures".
