Geography: Lying to the east of Johannesburg, the Ekurhuleni Metro area, incorporating the diverse towns of Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park (and Johannesburg International Airport), Nigel and Springs is a place of prosperity, unity and vibrancy.
History: Most of the towns in the Greater East Rand - the term used to describe the eastern section of the former Witwatersrand or Ridge of White Waters - grew up around the gold mines. Many of these towns were developed as satellite towns to support the growing workforce of Johannesburg, but each one has now developed into a separate town with an identity all its own.
Arts & Culture: Visitors to Ekurhuleni might be surprised at the cultural and historical experiences that await them. In Alberton, one can dine at numerous restaurants in town or relax at Willie's Place - a shebeen in Thokoza Township. The Thokoza Memorial wall, in Khumalo Street, honours the victims of the political conflict. Also in Alberton, remains of late Iron Age stonewall settlements have been found in the Meyersdal Koppie Nature Reserve. In Boksburg visitors can see the old Law Courts (1890), the Old Post Office (1898) and the St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church designed by Sir Herbert Baker, all of which are provincial heritage sites. In Germiston, art lovers can enjoy a visit to the Zicelele Ihlombe Gallery at the Katlehong Art Centre to see tapestries, pottery and sculpture by local artists. Visitors arriving at the Johannesburg International Airport can take a trip into Kempton Park and visit the Erikson Diamond Centre, as well as the Madiba Freedom Museum, which is a tribute to the apartheid struggle preceding the formation of democratic South Africa.
Science & Nature: The Rietvlei Zoo and Nature Reserve in Alberton is a satellite station of the Johannesburg Zoo, while the Rondebult Bird Sanctuary, a rare wetland area, has attractive birdwatching hides and ostrich, blesbok, reedbuck, springbok and zebra can be spotted here.
Entertainment: Ekurhuleni offers plenty of activities to keep everyone amused. The 'City of Lakes', Benoni, is a super family destination. The kids will love the Bunny Park in Pretoria Road, Rynfield, while picnicking along one of five lakes' shoreline or floating on a barge on the Middle Lake is enjoyable. The townships of Daveyton and Wattville can be visited on arranged tours and the final resting place of one of the key figures in recent South African history, Oliver Tambo, can be visited in Xaba Street, Wattville. Boksburg is a veritable goldmine of recreation. The children will love Wild Waters with its nine different water activities; Bokkie Park in Southdale Road where they can participate in farmyard activities such as milking cows; the Fun Factory with its roller skating and 10-pin bowling centre, while the Le Grange Bird Park and Boksburg Lake in Patronage Road are ideal spots for a lazy Sunday picnic - but with plenty to keep the kids amused. Over weekends there is a flea market at the large East Rand Mall Shopping Centre. For those who are looking for glitz and glamour, Ekurhuleni offers Caesars Gauteng as well as the Carnival City Casino. The area is also well known for its night life and vibey clubs and pubs. The flea market held every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday in the gardens of Edenvale's first farm house, Horwood's Farm, will prove to be great fun, while Germiston Lake with its surrounding parklands provides opportunities for sailing, mini golf and picnicking.
Sport: Ekurhuleni has many top class sports facilities on offer. Besides the numerous sport clubs offering traditional sports like tennis, football and rugby, it is also home to the Newmarket Turf Club and Reading Golf Course in Alberton, as well as Germiston's Gosforth Park Race Course and Germiston Golf Course.
