Geography: The town of Muldersdrift, generally made up of small holdings, farms and plots, lies at the foot of the southern slopes of the Witwatersberg and is a 45-minute drive from Johannesburg.

History: The history of this area goes back many eons, as anthropologists often regard this area as one of the places where civilisation first began. More recently, Muldersdrift made history in 1896 when Dr Jameson was arrested as a prisoner of war soon after the failed Jameson Raid. The raid was an attempt to capture Johannesburg from the Boers and allow Cecil John Rhodes to take over political power. It failed however. Visitors to the area who are interested in the South African (Anglo-Boer) War will find many interesting sites here.

Art and Culture: Muldersdrift and its surrounds are becoming increasingly well known as an arts and crafts centre. From home-made country furniture to excellent pottery, there is something for everyone. There are numerous art galleries and studios where some fine art can be viewed and bought. For the traveller interested in culture and local tradition there are tours to the Lesedi Cultural Village, which is an open-air living museum where the traditions of the local people can be experienced. Visitors can also take a tour to the township of Atteridgeville, and experience township life including visiting shebeens, listening to jazz and visiting a traditional healer.

Muldersdrift is known as the "wedding venue hub" of Johannesburg, Pretoria and surrounds and almost of everyday of the week and especially over weekends you will find the area packed with people joining the happy couples who are tying the knot. It is the combination of excellent wedding venues, cute chapels and brilliant scenery that makes the area so attractive.

Science and Nature: Muldersdrift is part of what is known as the Crocodile Ramble, a tourist route that runs along the Crocodile River. Along the route tourists can visit one of South Africa's most famous natural sites - the Cradle of Humankind. This World Heritage Site has been the place of great fossil discoveries which have cast light onto our ancestors and where we come from. Other natural attractions include various game reserves and the South African Lion Park, a 354ha privately owned reserve that offers drives and views of a variety of animals including lion. There are also excellent nurseries and herb gardens to be found in the Muldersdrift area.

Entertainment: Day trippers and those staying on for a few days will not be bored in this interesting part of Gauteng. Some of the country's finest restaurants are to be found here, while cosy country pubs are always popular. City slickers can experience the countryside on horse-riding trails or even something a little more exciting like white-river rafting. One of the most phenomenal ways to experience the area is to see it from above - in a hot-air balloon! While dads can get out and do their thing on a challenging 4x4 trail, the kids can be kept busy with activities like paint ball, pony rides and splashing in a swimming pool. Moms can spend their time relaxing in a spa at one the health resorts found in the area.

Sport: Hiking, mountain biking and many other outdoor sports are very popular in this part of the country.

Did You Know? Fossils found in the area show that man's earliest ancestors were roaming these plains. The fossils are between 2 and 4-million years old!
