Geography: One of KwaZulu-Natal's premier coastal holiday resort lies just 30 minutes north of Durban in the heart of the Dolphin Coast.
History: "The Pearl" of the Dolphin Coast can date its origins back to 1953, when a group of entrepreneurs began investigating land to develop a township in the Compensation Beach area. It was proclaimed in 1954 and the name was gleaned from a magazine advert promoting a brand of stockings! It officially became a town in 1966 and reached borough status in 1986.
Arts and Culture: The cultural village of Shakaland is approximately an hour's drive from Ballito where visitors can step back in time and enter the world of Shaka, King of the Zulus, while The Nandi Experience, named in honour of Shaka's mother is a three-hour daytime adventure. On a beautiful inland site, only ten minutes drive from Ballito is The Kingdom, which affords visitors Indian, Zulu and British colonial cultural experiences and a chance to try one of the traditional meals. The grave of Albert Luthuli, the South African political leader and the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize is within close proximity of the town.
Science and Nature: Ballito makes up part of the The Dolphin Coast, an area of amazing beaches and scenic views of sugar cane coated rolling hills. Named after the bottlenose dolphins that frequently play in the waters close to shore, visitors can also see whales on their annual migration to Mozambique. Nature lovers will delight in the Harold Johnson Nature Reserve, situated on the banks of the Tugela River, which offers walking trails, picnic sites, a small variety of game and a large variety of bird life.
Entertainment: Ballito has a warm and friendly atmosphere and will provide great entertainment for holidaymakers and travellers alike. Willard Beach has gained Blue Flag Status and it provides safe swimming with qualified lifeguards, as well as being protected by shark nets. Modern shopping centres cater for all your needs and once the sun has set the nightlife will definitely not disappoint. The town has a wide range of restaurants, and visitors can relax and have a drink in one of the many pubs.
Sport: Willard Beach is a popular spot for surfing and body boarding and competitions are regularly held here. Further south at Salmon Bay, the Ballito Inflatable Boat Clubhouse is a launch for watercraft. The area is home to numerous good fishing spots, while the quality diving spots are excellent for spear fishermen. Scuba-divers will revel in the beautiful reefs. For more traditional sports, the Umhlali Country Club has a magnificent golf course with the odd zebra as spectator. The club also caters for tennis, squash and bowls players. Another wonderful golf course is the internationally designed one at Zimbali.
Did You Know? Dolphins have been known to ride waves alongside surfers!
