Geography: Estcourt is situated on the N3, about four hours' drive from Gauteng and two hours from Durban.
History: First named Bushman's River, the historic town of Estcourt is now the centre of a bustling agricultural, industrial and tourism industry. A fort built on a hill dominating the Bushman's River was first occupied in 1847. The castle-like building was designed as a stronghold to protect transport riders and the herds of cattle that were driven across the river. A few years later a trading station, blacksmith's and inn were established, and in 1863 the village was named Estcourt in honour of Thomas Estcourt, an English parliamentarian with vested interests in the farmers.
Art and Culture: Estcourt is the gateway to a wide and fascinating tourism area and visitors can follow in the footprints of historical figures like Winston Churchill and Chief Langalibablele. This area was often the venue for battles between Nguni, Boer and English armies. Fort Dunford, which has replaced the original fort on the hill is now a museum and visitors can amble through its castle-like structure with its thick walls, barred windows and two square towers. According to local legend quite a few ghosts haunt the fort! The area surrounding the town is also rich in San rock art and some can be seen at the open-air Bushman Cave Museum.
Science and Nature: Estcourt is home to quite a few of the important food producing factories of South Africa, including Nestl<\#233>, Escort Bacon, Clover and Sasco. The visitor to Estcourt will be spoilt for choice if nature is of interest. There are two nature reserves on the banks of the Wagendrif Dam on the Bushman's River, while the awe-inspiring peaks of Giant's Castle Nature Reserve are close to town.
Entertainment: The resort at the Wagendrif Dam offers great family entertainment and a wide range of water sports, while hiking is always popular in the surrounding areas. Visitors to Estcourt can enjoy shopping for interesting products at bargain prices at numerous outlets on the fabulous Factory Shop Route.
Sport: Owing to an ideal climate and abundance of water in the area, outdoor activities are popular pastimes. The Bushman's River provides excellent trout fishing as well as ecotourism opportunities like kayaking and river rafting.
Did You Know? Winston Churchill arrived in Estcourt in 1899 at the age of 25 as a South African (Anglo-Boer) War correspondent for the London Morning Post.
