Geography: Mooi River can be found just off the N3 about 158km from Durban.

History: Originally named Lawrenceville after the Irish farmer who established the settlement, the village took its current name from that of the river it is situated on, namely the Mooi River. In Afrikaans the word mooi means 'pretty'.

Art and Culture: There are a number of sites of cultural interest for the traveller who goes to Mooi River. The Weston Agricultural Museum has displays and exhibitions depicting the history of the district while the Rhode House Museum also offers a variety of local history exhibits. The Bushman Cave Museum at Giants Castle in the Drakensberg is not far away and this open-air museum provides insight into the lives of the San people and is well worth visiting for an interesting day out.

Science and Nature: The Mooi River has its source in the foothills of the Drakensberg and then joins the Tugela before running off to the ocean. Situated in prime cattle country, the town of Mooi River is today a busy agricultural and stock farming centre. The breeding of racehorses is also an important activity. About 25km from town there is an 80m high waterfall on the Mooi River.

For those looking for adventure, abseiling, river rafting and mountain biking will provide an adrenalin fix. Hiking and horse-riding through the countryside provide a gentler option.

Sport: The Mooi River Country Club has a challenging 11-hole, 18-tee golf course, as well as two bowling greens and tennis and squash facilities.
