Geography: Mtubatuba, on the Elephant Coast, is located roughly 200km north of Durban and 25km north of St Lucia.
History: Originally established as a railway siding in 1903, Mtubatuba is named after the Zulu Chief Mthubuthubu. A sugar mill was opened here in 1916, but in 1918 a devastating flood swept everything, except a bank vault, away. The mill was rebuilt, and incredibly in 1925 another flood swept half of it away. After yet more flooding two years later, canals were built in order to deal with any rising water. Today Mtubatuba is a strong commercial, service, transport and administrative centre for the North Eastern Zululand region.
Art and Culture: The town is ideally located as a base from which to explore the rich culture of the Zulu nation and visitors will be entranced by the local customs, traditions and arts and crafts. Mtubatuba is also the seat of the Hlabisa magistracy.
Science and Nature: Mtubatuba is the southern entrance into the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park, South Africa's first Natural World Heritage Site, which has a stunning array of bird, plant and animal life. In every alternate June, Mtubatuba buzzes as it hosts the African continent's largest game auction and bidders from around the country and around the world descend on the town.
Did You Know? The town was named after Chief Mthubuthubu. His name means "he who was beaten out" and refers to the fact that he had a difficult birth, and was given to him by the midwives present.
