Geography: The delightful coastal village of Mtunzini is situated on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal, about 130km from Durban, in the Kingdom of the Zulu. It is well situated as a springboard to many attractions in this northeastern part of South Africa.
History: The name Mtunzini is derived from the Zulu word Emthunzini, which means "in the shade of the umthunzi tree". This large milkwood tree to which the name refers to is in fact of John Dunn's Indaba Tree and it can be seen in the Umlalazi Reserve. Dunn was a British man who became a Zulu chief, and his story is inextricably tied up with the history of Mtunzini. He became an adviser to the Zulu King Cetshwayo and eventually had 49 wives and fathered 117 children. Dunn built four housing complexes in the area and this was the start of what today is Mtunzini. Mtunzini is a tranquil and popular holiday resort, whose economy is mainly built on sugar cane, timber and tourism.
Art and Culture: Mtunzini lies in the heart of the Zulu Kingdom and travellers to the area can enjoy many of the cultural practises and traditions of this strong nation. Tourists can visit one of numerous Zulu villages and experience this culture and invest in the local community by buying a traditional curio or watching traditional dancing. The Zulu people are well known for their colourful beadwork, which actually is a type of coded language. Why not send a love letter that is spelled out in beads?
Science and Nature: Mtunzini has a wonderful subtropical to tropical climate which has resulted in a large variety of plant life. Amazingly, just this area of the north coast has more plant species than the whole of Europe! The people of Mtunzini take conservation very seriously and the town was declared a conservancy in November 1995 and in 1999 received a Conservation Award from the KwaZulu Nature Conservation Services. That said, it is no surprise that this area is a nature lovers' paradise. There are 300 recorded species of birds in the area, including the extremely rare Palmnut vulture. Umlalazi Nature Reserve is well loved for its long stretch of unspoilt beach and its raffia palm grove, which has been declared a provincial heritage site.
Entertainment: The lagoon in the Umlalazi Nature Reserve is a fabulous spot to enjoy a picnic as well as wide variety of water sports. The ocean is also great for water sport and some of these activities include surfing, wakeboarding, bodyboarding, water-skiing, kiteboarding and paddling.
Sport: More traditional sports including golf, tennis and squash can be played at the Country Club, and there is also a Bowling Club. Horse-riding is popular, while the numerous hiking trails are a great way to experience the animals and other natural wonders of this magnificent area.
Did You Know? John Dunn is the only white man ever to become a Zulu chief.
