Geography: Pongola is situated in the Zulu Kingdom about 100km from Piet Retief on the N2.
History: The town of Pongola, wedged between the border of Swaziland and the Phongola River developed around the irrigation scheme that started here during the 1930's.
Art and Culture: Visitors to Pongola can browse through the offerings at the curio centre with its community craft stalls and museum with exhibits pertaining to Zulu culture and tradition. Travellers can buy fresh produce from the numerous farm stalls dotted along the roadside.
Science and Nature: Although the irrigation scheme initially met with little success, it was improved by the government and used for its original purpose. A large sugar mill was built in the town. Close to the border of Swaziland is the Pongola Nature Reserve, which is home to a great variety of flora and fauna. Visitors will be able to see four of the Big Five as well as numerous cycad species and the rare honey badger. The rugged scenery around the Lebombo Mountains is simply breathtaking.
Entertainment: Some of South Africa's oldest and most renowned reserves are located within 100km of Pongola.
Sport: The walking and hiking trails that go through the rugged and scenic reserves of the area are challenging, yet beautiful.
Did You Know? Phongola River's name is derived from Zulu and means "river of troughs".
