Geography: The village of St Lucia is 25km from Mtubatuba along the R618.
History: The village lies within the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, which at 328, 000ha makes it South Africa's third largest conservation area. The St Lucia Estuary within the park was proclaimed in 1999 as a World Heritage Site owing to the fact that it is home to five distinct and very sensitive ecosystems.
Arts and Culture: At the St Lucia Craft Market visitors can see a wide variety of local crafts, beadwork, woodcarving and basketry.
Science and Nature: The St Lucia Wetland Park's major components are Lake St Lucia, the inland Mkhuze Game Reserve, the St Lucia Marine Reserve, Sodwana Bay National Park, Lake Sibaya and the Kosi Bay Nature Reserve. The area is a nature lover's paradise. Animals that can be spotted include elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino as well as numerous species of antelope. The area is home to one of the highest concentration of bird species in the country and over 400 species have been recorded!
Entertainment: The main attractions of the area are eco-related and visitors can enjoy pristine coastline and nature at its undeveloped best. There are various boat trips and kayak safaris on which adventurers can spot Nile crocodiles and hippos.
Sport: Outdoor enthusiasts will love the great fishing opportunities as well as hiking or boating through the wetland area. Snorkelling and scuba-diving are also popular activities in the aquatic wonderland of the lake.
