Geography: The residential and resort town of Umhlanga is 10 minutes north of Durban along the old north coast road.
History: The area was originally a huge sugar plantation that belonged to Sir Marshall Campbell. In 1920 his daughter, Virginia, and her husband built a hotel near the mouth of the Mhlanga River. This was the start of what today is a very popular resort town. It attained independent borough status in 1970 and today includes La Lucia to the south.
Art and Culture: The Sharks Board's headquarters are in Umhlanga, with the first shark net being hung in 1962. There is an audiovisual presentation at the Board where visitors can get an idea of how the nets are hung and visitors can even get to watch a shark dissection!
Science and Nature: The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve protects a strip of coastal forest, while the 76ha Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve was established on the banks of the Mgeni River. It is now used as an environment education centre.
Entertainment: The beaches of Umhlanga have Blue Flag status and are excellent for the whole family to enjoy. Safe swimming, surfing and fishing are popular activities. For those looking for a bit of nightlife fun, there are numerous clubs and pubs in the town, while the bright lights of the Durban beachfront are not too far at all.
Sport: There are many good diving spots on this stretch of the coast and the old Mozambican trawler sunk in 1990 to form an artificial reef is still largely intact. Large shoals of fish around the wreck making for an excellent dive site.
Did You Know? It was Sir Marshall Campbell who introduced the colourful rickshaws to Durban's beachfront.
