This unique town, with its distinct history, was at one stage the capital of the New Republic. Vryheid is the northern gateway into Zululand and the start of the Battlefields Route. This traces the history of the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer Wars across countryside dotted with battlefield sites and memorials. It is a good centre for exploring the Blood River Monument, the Prince Imperial's grave and the battlefields of Hlobane, Kambula and Holkrans, and the British entrenchments on Vryheid Mountain/Lancaster Hill.
