Geography: The Magoebaskloof area with its magnificent indigenous forest, cascading waterfalls, placid lakes and craggy kloofs is situated on the slopes of the Wolkberg Mountains only 3 1/2 hours' drive from Gauteng.
History: This enchanting corner of Limpopo Province, known as the 'Land of the Silver Mists', is steeped in history. In the little village of Haenertsburg the history of prospectors and how they made - and lost - their fortunes, lingers. There is a gruesome story that is told about the spectacular ravine. When Chief Makgoba and his tribe would not pay tax or relocate on orders of the Transvaal Government in the late 1800's, they were tracked down by Boers and Swazi warriors. The chief's head was presented to the Transvaalers as proof of his death. It was during this time that the name Makgoba changed to what we know today as Magoeba.
Arts and Culture: Magoebaskloof is indeed a special retreat and its magic, magnificence and mystery ensure that the visitor returns again and again. The well-known painter and naturalist Charles Maberly lived until his death in 1972 on the farm Narina in Duiwelskloof. Owing to his way with animals he was often referred to as Dr Dolittle!
Science and Nature: Visitors to this area will love the spectacular scenery, where the morning mists are simply magical. The clear mountain air refreshes and travellers will delight in some of the most beautiful gardens in South Africa. Taking a drive through the Letaba Garden Route, with its flowering cherries and multi-coloured azaleas is a wonderful way to relax and get away from the bustle of the city. The ancient cycad forest northeast of Duiwelskloof is where Modjadje, the legendary Rain Queen, has her kraal. The species of cycad known as the Modjadje Palm is more than 50-million years old.
Entertainment: Visitors to this part of the world can simply wind down and relax and enjoy the stunning scenery. The drive through the ravine is incredible and the road taking you through the slopes of Wolkbergand has lovely views of the cascades of the upper Letaba. It then passes the forest-covered gorges of the Magoesbaskloof, with its spectacular Debegeni Waterfall. Travellers can also easily get to the Kruger National Park, which is only an hour away.
Sport: The area has a wide variety of sporting facilities available. The pristine waters are wonderful for fly-fishermen, while numerous trails cater for the gentle rambler to the serious hiker. More traditional sports like tennis, squash and golf can be played while excellent water sports opportunities abound.
Did You Know? When a Modjadje or "ruler of the day" is too old to carry on ruling, she is obliged to kill herself by taking poison and the next Modjadje is able to then carry on the tradition.
