Geography: Ermelo is situated 205km from Johannesburg near to Swaziland.
History: The area was used by outspanners on the trade route between Lydenburg and Natal. It attracted settlers in the mid 1850's and Reverend F Lion-Cachet, a Dutch minister established a parish there in 1871. Today, Ermelo is one of the larger towns in Mpumalanga, and is a busy centre for farming, as well as being a stopover to KwaZulu Natal.
Art and Culture: Visitors can view numerous San caves with displays of the nomad's rock art. In town there is a South African (Anglo-Boer) War Memorial close to the Dutch Reformed Church, which commemorates those who lost their lives in the war. Another interesting historical site is the Paul Kruger Bridge, which was at one time the bridge into the old Transvaal. It is now a provincial heritage site.
Science and Nature: The area is home to many large coal mines as under the grassy plains is buried the eighth largest coal deposit in the world and Ermelo is the country's main source of anthracite and torbanite.
Entertainment: The facilities at the dams in the area, including the Willem Brummer Dam, the Douglas Dam and the Pet Dams, have been upgraded and are great recreational and entertainment spots for the entire family.
