Geography: Situated in the lush green Assegai Valley, the town of Piet Retief is close to the Swazi border and about 330km from Johannesburg/Pretoria and 460km from Durban.
History: The town of Piet Retief, named after the Boer leader, was surveyed and established in 1883. Although almost completely destroyed in the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, Piet Retief is today the heart of an important timber producing area.
Art and Culture: One of the interesting features of the town is the large community of German-speaking residents who can often be seen performing in traditional brass bands. At the Piet Retief Library and Information Centre, visitors can delve into the history of the town, while the many war memorials such as the Zulu War Memorial, the Heinrich Filter and Nils Larsen Monument, and the gravesites of the many British soldiers who died in the Intombe War show the senselessness of strife. Numerous churches can be found in the town, and the Dutch Reformed Church, now a provincial heritage site is a fine example of the work of well-known architect Gerhard Moerdijk.
Science and Nature: The town is surrounded by several game farms and is a gateway to the game reserves of Swaziland, northern KwaZulu-Natal, southern Mozambique and the Mpumalanga Lowveld and is well known for its forestry and wood manufacturing processes. Visitors to Piet Retief can visit the Oribi Conservatory, the only sanctuary in the country devoted to the protection of this graceful antelope. At the Piet Retief Game and Bird Sanctuary, visitors can see local fauna and flora as well as endemic aloe species.
Entertainment: many of the activities in this town are nature based and include excellent birdwatching and some lovely nature and hiking trails. One of the finest ways to see the countryside is on horseback.
Sport: The sport facilities of the town include tennis, squash, indoor cricket, as well as a 9-hole golf course, while the dams and rivers are well stocked and the fishermen will not be disappointed.
Did You Know? Piet Retief is probably one of the smallest independent states ever known, due to the fact that in 1891 the 72 inhabitants of the village were ruled by their own president!
