Geography: Lying in a rich cattle-farming area, Vryburg is situated halfway between Kimberley and Mmabatho-Mafikeng.
History: As far as agricultural towns go, the history of Vryburg is quite fascinating. After a war between the Tlapin tribe and the Koranna around 1882, European mercenaries that were employed during the war were offered farms as well as other assets. It wasn't long before these mercenary-turned-farmers decided to establish their own state. Thus it was that the Republic of Stellaland came about, complete with its own postal service and flag. The capital for the republic was to be Vryburg. This freedom was short-lived however, as the area was annexed by Paul Kruger and the Transvaal Republic in the same year! It wasn't long before the British intervened, and in turn Stellaland was annexed to Britain without a major disturbance in 1885. The Stellaland flag hung in Windsor Castle for many years, but was returned to Vryburg in 1934, and it can still be seen in the City Hall.
Arts and Culture: For the traveller who is interested in the cultural life of many hundreds of years ago, the Kinderdam Rock Engravings and other art works at the Vryburg Museum will prove to be of interest. Other cultural attractions of the area include the Tierkloof (Tiger Kloof) Missionary Station, the Theiler Agricultural Museum and Cattle Research Centre and the Old Gaol main gate. The prison was infamous for the robbers, horse thieves and diamond smugglers that frequented it, as well as for the notorious Scotty Smith, a kind of Robin Hood figure.
Science and Nature: Vryburg is often referred to as the "Texas of South Africa", as it is the home of the county's largest beef producers. Other important farming includes maize and peanuts. Each year the town becomes a flurry of activity as one of the largest cattle sales in the southern hemisphere with an enormous turnover takes place. More than 250,000 head of cattle are auctioned per year. But for those who love nature, the entire Bophirima Region, with its vast African savannah, is home to a great variety of game species, including lion, buffalo and rhino. These animals can be seen at many game and nature reserves in the area, including the Leon Taljaard Nature Reserve.
Entertainment: There are many outdoor activities to keep everyone busy owing to a rugged landscape, and the annual agricultural shows always prove to be a hit with the public. The town hosts South Africa's third largest agricultural show and a series of events dedicated to outdoor activities in the scenic, rugged area surrounding the town.
Sport: The Vryburg Golf Club offers something for the golf fans.
