Geography: The typical Karoo town of Richmond is situated about 100km north of Three Sisters along the N1. It is well situated as an overnight stop on the Gauteng-Cape Town route.
History: Like many Karoo towns, Richmond was founded to meet the religious needs of a growing farming community. Built next to a river in 1843, with its centrepiece being the village square, it was named after the new Governor of the Cape, Sir Peregrine Maitland's father-in-law, the Duke of Richmond. The town saw some action during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, and was attacked twice by the Boers. There are reminders of these battles at both the old Dutch Reformed Cemetery and the Anglican Cemetery. Today Richmond is well regarded for its merino sheep farming and horse ranching.
Art and Culture: Richmond is one of only two towns in the world that has a museum of horses. The Saddle Horse Museum not only has displays and exhibits on horses, but also has some novelties including a wooden arm made for a Boer soldier. Other displays in the museum include old mineral water bottling machinery. The architecture of the town is typical of mid-19th century Karoo, with many of the buildings dating to before the 1890's. Tourists in the little town can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere these buildings bring to the streets.
Science and Nature: Richmond is well known for its many rich fossil sites. On the farm Klipplaat there are 60 claw-like fossilised footprints believed to have been made by an Aulacephalodon, a slow-moving, plant-eating reptile that lived in the area about 250-million years ago. The Karoo is also a fabulous and serenely beautiful area that is great for bird-watching and game-viewing.
Entertainment: Travellers can relax and enjoy a pint in an old-fashioned pub in the hotel in town.

Sport: Hunting is popular in this part of the country.

Did You Know? Richmond is the birthplace of medical pioneer Dr Emil Hoffa who is hailed as the founder of modern orthopaedics.
