This is an attractive little sun-baked Karoo town laid out in 1844, originally named Victoria, but renamed Victoria West to distinguish it from the district Victoria in the Eastern Cape. It became an important trading centre and staging post after the discovery of diamonds in Hopetown in 1867, and today marks the beginning of the Diamond Route. Victoria West is the home of the oldest working art deco cinema in South Africa, the Apollo Theatre, where an annual Film Festival is held during September.
The main street is graced by an imposing Dutch Reformed Church and also has an Anglican Church, designed by the Governor of the Cape Colony between 1854 and 1859, Sophia Grey. Other attractions include the local museum depicting the foundation and development of the town, a 19th-century print shop which is partially in use and the Mannetjies Roux Rugby Museum. A nature reserve with several species of antelope lies on the outskirts of town. The three flat-topped hillocks, Three Sisters, lie south of the town.
