Geography: Albertinia is 51km from Mossel Bay and 35km from Gouritsmond.

History: The town, like many others in the area, owes its origins to that of the church. It was named after Rev Albertyn, who wanted to establish a new congregation south of Riversdale. While the farm Grootfontein was bought in 1900 for this purpose, the town itself was only proclaimed in 1904. Today, Albertinia is known more for its mining, other natural resources and adventure sports.

Arts & Culture: Visitors can see an excellent example of the town founders' homes and the church in Mission Street, Theronsville, while a selection of crafts and handwork, all done by local artists and crafters, can be viewed and bought at the Potpourri Kontreiwinkel.

Science & Nature: Ochre and kaolin are mined here, while aloe factories make medicinal and high quality skin-care products using aloe extract. The area is renowned for its coastal nature reserve which is home to an indigenous and unique fynbos species. Whales can also be spotted from here! If it is game that you want to track down, Albertinia has a private game reserve, home to the Big Five and a wonderful array of bird life.

Sport: The bridge at the Gourits River Gorge is a fantastic spot for bungee jumping, and the area offers popular hiking and mountain biking trails.

Did you know? Albertinia has one of the few sand golf courses in South Africa.
