Geography: Beautifully situated on the banks of the Breede River, the tiny village of Bonnievale is surrounded by the Langeberg Mountain Range in the northeast, and the Riviersonderend Mountains in the southwest. It is about 180km from Cape Town.

History: The town was established by Christopher Rigg, who had made some money mining gold in Barberton in the late 1800's. After buying a piece of land known as Bosjesmandrift, he proceeded to build an irrigation canal, split the land up and sold the bits off as plots. He named the new village Bonnievale. The town lies along Route 62, a popular tourist route that meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn, the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth.

Arts & Culture: Visitors to the town can see an unusual building known as Myrtle's Little Church. This Gothic-styled church is made of excellent material, including a solid lead roof and tiles imported from Italy. Used as a church by the locals until Rigg's death, today it serves as a museum.

Science & Nature: Locals and tourists alike can enjoy the wild flowers in spring at the Kobus Steyn Nature Garden. The little town grows a lot of produce, and the area is not known as the Valley of Cheese and Wine for nothing! There are four co-operative wine cellars, and numerous private wine producers. Bonnievale is part of the Robertson Wine Route, which is well regarded for its quality reds. The village is also home to two cheese factories, one of which has the only Bactoscan in Africa. This piece of equipment tests total bacteria count.

Entertainment: There are numerous activities to keep visitors busy and active. Wine enthusiasts can take part in wine tasting at the numerous cellars, while the energetic traveller can go on a hike, a 4x4 trail or go fishing and canoeing up the Breede River. In November locals and visitors alike enjoy the festivities at the Bonnievale Cheese and Wine Festival.

Sport: The Bonnievale Golf Club will provide a chance for the golf enthusiast to get out and enjoy the surroundings, and squeeze in a round of their favourite sport.

Did you know? Well-known writer, poet and artist Breyten Breytenbach, was born in Bonnievale in 1939 and grew up in the small town of Wellington.
