Caledon lies 110km east of Cape Town on the N2. This town owes its existence to its famous hot springs, rich in minerals, and first used by the Khoi people. It was only in 1708 that Ferdinand Appel was granted grazing rights in the area. A hundred years later a village, Swartberg, was created near the site of the springs. In 1810 Mill and Church streets were laid out, and in 1813 the town was renamed in honour of the Governor, the Earl of Caledon.
Caledon is situated in a fynbos and agricultural region which produces barley, wheat, canola and wool. Annual events include the Wild Flower Festival (September) and the Christmas Lights Festival (December). Farms provide agricultural tours, 4X4 routes, walking trails, flower and bird viewing under the supervision of the landowner. A Blue Crane Route has been formed to protect this endangered bird.
