Geography: Ceres is situated in the fertile and scenic valley of the Warm Bokkeveld in the Boland. The 90-minute drive from Cape Town is wonderfully scenic, and local Capetonians often use the Ceres as a weekend getaway spot. People travelling between the West Coast and the Garden Route also find it a fabulous stopover.
History: In 1854 the original settlers called this area Ceres, after the Roman goddess of agriculture, owing to its natural fertile soil perfect for fruit growing.
Arts and Culture: At the Togryers Museum ('transport riders') visitors can see interesting displays of wagons that were used in the Ceres, as well as a collection of Africana books. The Wethu Experience is based at Op-die-Berg in the Koue Bokkeveld and it provides a number of locally guided tours to ancient San rock art sites.
Science and Nature: The climate, which is hot for most of the year, is perfect for the cultivation of deciduous fruits, including apples, pears, plums and peaches. In the cold short winter, however, the Ceres regularly experiences snowfalls and it has often been referred to as the 'Switzerland of South Africa'!
Entertainment: The large variety of tours in and around Ceres include wine, historical, fruit, and San rock painting tours and are great for a family day out.
Sport: There is much to do in the Ceres for the outdoor enthusiast. There are 4x4 trails up the Matroosberg, hiking and mountain bike trails, abseiling and canoeing for the adventurous traveller, while horse riding, cherry picking at the Klondyke Cherry Farm and minigolf are more relaxing activities! If there have been heavy enough snowfalls, skiers from all over South Africa can often be found on the peak of the Matroosberg. When the snow has fallen, why not try skiing or snowboarding?
Did you know? At 5,520ha the Vaalkloof Private Nature Reserve is the biggest Natural Heritage site in the Western Cape.
