Other Accommodation in Clanwilliam Western Cape South Africa

Geography: The town of Clanwilliam lies at the point where the Olifants and Jan Dissel rivers meet at the foot of the Cederberg.

History: One of the ten oldest towns in South Africa, Clanwilliam has a rich history. Originally named Jan Disselsvlei after the botanist, the name was eventually changed to Clanwilliam by Governor Sir John Cradock after his father-in-law the Earl of Clanwilliam.

Arts and Culture: Fascinating San rock art can be viewed at The Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve, including an interesting site that depicts a zigzag line with animal and human figures walking on it. Those interested in local art including paintings, tapestries and hand woven carpets can visit Die Kunshuis art gallery.

Science and Nature: The area is famous for the growing of the healthy rooibos plant and indigenous species of cedar. For the stargazer the private observatory in the Cedarberg operated by amateur astronomers welcomes visitors to check out spectacularly bright views of the southern skies.

Entertainment: Clanwilliam is well-known for its leather shoes called "Veldskoene". A visit to the factory is entertaining, and if you like you can buy the shoes in any colour or size!

Sport: For the water-skiing enthusiast, the Clanwilliam Dam Resort is regarded as the best dam in the Western Cape to ski on. And because the dam has more indigenous fish species than any south of the Zambezi it is also great for fishing.

Did you know? Clanwilliam is the heart of the rooibos tea industry.
