Geography: Situated in the middle of the Great Karoo, it is a worthwhile stop for people travelling along the N1 highway.
History: Laingsburg was established in 1881 and named after the Commissioner of Crown Lands at the time, John Laing. It was originally a trading post, and to a point still is today! It is a centre for Dorper sheep farming and merino-wool production, as well as the growing of fruit, lucerne and vegetables. The town is linked to the history of the Boer War, and it was here that the controversial Boer Commandant Gideon Scheepers was captured.
Arts and Culture: In the small museum at the public library, visitors can dip into artefacts that tell the history of the town and its people.
Science and Nature: Laingsburg is a geologists dream! The town is famed for its layers of fossilised mudstone and a fascinating strip of white quartz that runs through the veld, showing how the continents drifted millions of years ago. The San people that lived in the area used this quartz as spearheads to hunt with. More recently, the town was in the news in 1981 when the Buffels River flash flooded and caused a great deal of devastation.
Entertainment: Travellers can embark on a geological walk that is laid out on the farm Geelbeksbrug, next to the South African (Anglo-Boer) War Blockhouse. Fascinating rock formations can be seen all along this very popular walk.
Sport: In September, Laingsburg hosts a gruelling 80km ultra marathon where more than 200 runners face the challenge of running on both tarred and gravel surfaces.
Did you know? The British built blockhouse at Ketting Station was immortalised by Rudyard Kipling in his poem "Bridge Guard in the Karoo".
