Geography: The picturesque town of Lambert's Bay is situated about 280km north of Cape Town, and lies west of Clanwilliam. It is well situated on the West Coast and as such makes an ideal base from which other West Coast locations like Elands Bay, Doring Bay and Strandfontein can easily be visited.

History: Originally known as Otterdam, the town has gradually developed from a fishing village into a popular holiday resort. Lambert's Bay was proclaimed as such in 1913 after which the first plots of land were sold off. The town was named after a former British admiral, Sir Robert Lambert, who surveyed the coastline for the Royal British Navy between 1826 and 1840, but it was only in 1918 however, after the opening of a lobster-canning factory was built, that development of the town really began in earnest. Lambert's Bay is today still an important fishing village, as well as having become a major tourist attraction.

Arts and Culture: Visitors to the town will not only be confined to the beach and the harbour, but can also peruse many interesting cultural spots. The town's rich cultural history can be experienced at the Sandveld Museum with its interesting and ancient artefacts, as well as the San rock art that was emblazoned onto the rocks of the surrounding hills and mountains many hundreds of years ago. For the traveller who is interested in things historical, there are salvaged items of the British ship "Syblle" to be seen at the museum and at the "Plaaskombuis" restaurant at Steenboksfontein. "Sybille" was a gunboat that was used during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War, and it came to a sticky end when in ran aground in 1901.

Science and Nature: Lambert's Bay is well known for its temperate, year-round mild climate, and as such has become a popular holiday spot. Although the winter is the rainy season, there are often more sunny days than not, and the warm dry summers are simply spectacular. Visitors to the area are in luck if they catch the start of the rainy season, as it is the time when the wild flowers burst into a cascade of colour. Lambert's Bay is set in the heart of Namaqua Daisy country and once they bloom, these flowers transform the landscape into a colourful paradise. The town is well known for its famous Bird Island, which can be reached by walking along the breakwater wall. Visitors can view numerous bird species from the lookout, and also look out across the three hectares of the island. Another excellent bird watching spot is at the estuary of the Jakkals River, which, when flooded, attracts a wide variety of colourful migratory birds. Also of interest to the nature lover is that during whale season from July to October, these magnificent creatures can be viewed from both the shore and from boats that take visitors out on excursions.

Entertainment: Lambert's Bay is a stunning place to visit. Everything that the West Coast is famous for can be found in this one location, from the lovely climate and beautiful long white beaches to the great fishing and water sports. The area is especially well regarded for its culture of excellent open-air dining, and the deliciously fresh seafood dishes are a speciality. The succulent West Coast Lobster is too good to be true, and the other speciality fish dishes include snoek, galjoen and Cape Bream. Other than dining out, there are lots more activities to keep the whole family entertained. Some of these include outdoors activities like 4x4 adventures through to fishing and crayfish diving.

Sport: Lambert's Bay is a great destination for the outdoor enthusiast. The dunes are challenging for 4x4 fanatics, as well as for sand-boarders, and those just wanting to roll around and have some fun. The angling in this part of the world is simply brilliant, and fishing off the beach is one of the best sporting activities this region has to offer.
