Geography: Langebaan, on the West Coast, with its scenic Langebaan Lagoon is just over one hundred kilometres from Cape Town.
History: The area was inhabited by the Khoe thousands of years ago, but in more modern times has attracted the colonists - the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English! It was here, in 1662, that Jan van Riebeek sent scouts to find and bring fresh water back to what would later become Cape Town.
Arts & Culture: Visitors can embark on a Cultural and Historical Route, which takes in historical buildings, art galleries and curio shops.
Science & Nature: The name Langebaan is said to originate from a Dutch phrase meaning "Long Fjord". It is a registered wetland and is, biologically, the richest stretch of water in South Africa. The 30 000 ha West Coast National Park protects some 300 species of birds, including pelicans, Cape gannets and flamingos and is an ideal place to visit, to drive around the lagoon, or to experience the spectacular flower display in August and September.
Entertainment: The village boasts several very good restaurants, ranging from haute cuisine to traditional.
Sport: This popular town and seaside resort offers the outdoor sports lover absolutely everything, including kitesurfing, windsurfing, kayaking and mountain biking.
Did you know? During the Second World War the Royal Air Force used the Langebaan Lagoon as a runway for their giant Catalina flying boats.
