Geography: This Indian Ocean coastal village and harbour is situated along the Garden Route, halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
History: Mossel Bay has a rich association with the Portuguese explorers of the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1488, Bartholomeu Dias threw anchor in the Bay of St Blaize. But it was Vasco de Gama who named it "Aguada de S<\#224>o Bras" because it was a great source of fresh water, and here the explorers first came into contact with the Khoe-San people and bartering between the cultures began. It was renamed Mossel Bay in 1601 by the Dutch navigator, Paulus van Caerden because he found that the mussels, still rated today as amongst the finest in the world, were much appreciated by his crew.
Arts and Culture: Visitors can peruse the history of the town by visiting the Bartholomeu Dias Museum complex, which houses an interesting padrao (stone cross), donated by the Portuguese to commemorate de Gama's landing. The Khoe-San cave contains artefacts dating back eighty-thousand years, and visitors can experience the local culture in the Khoe-style village, which includes an open-air museum of Khoe culture, a curio shop and traditional dancing.
Science and Nature: The freshwater spring that was named "Aguada de S<\#224>o Bras", or the "watering place of Saint Blaize", was described in 1512 as "flowing over a rocky verge into a small dam". Incredibly to this day the water has still not run dry!
Entertainment: The indoor flea market is great entertainment for the family, as is the Botlierskop game drive.
Sport: The excellent wind-protected beaches of Mossel Bay makes surfing a popular activity, while other sporting activities include golf, tennis and bowls. For the more adventurous traveller, deep-sea fishing and diving, and boat based whale watching is available, while for something a little more extreme, visitors can go shark cave diving or bungee jumping.
