Geography: Just 2km from the foot of the Swartberg, Prince Albert can be found on the R407.
History: Named in honour of Britain's Prince Consort, the town was given municipal status in 1902. Like most towns in the area it was originally developed as a sheep farming area, but vineyards and orchards are grown under irrigation. Prince Albert experienced a mad gold rush in 1890, when alluvial gold nuggets were discovered!
Arts and Culture: The quiet streets of this oasis village have beautifully preserved Cape Dutch, Karoo and Victorian buildings, of which thirteen are provincial heritage sites.
Science and Nature: The superb climate and high sunshine index of Prince Albert make it the perfect base point for exploring the Swartberg with its impressive and "hellish" pass, the Gamkaskloof, as well as for checking out awesome rock formations and fascinating fauna and flora. The impressive night skies of the Karoo make for truly amazing stargazing opportunities.
Entertainment: The annual Olive Food and Wine Festival has loads of interesting and exciting events taking place on the last weekend of April. At other times of the year visitors can embark on historical walks, a Ghost Walk or listen to Alisa tell you stories about Prince Albert.
Sport: Hiking, biking and 4x4 trails are popular sporting activities in the area.
Did you know? Prince Albert farmers are restoring vineyards that were last farmed in the 19th century.
