Geography: Riversdale is 300km from Cape Town and is situated along the Garden Route. Between the Langeberg Mountain range and the sea, within easy reach of surrounding towns, Riversdale is an ideal stopover for those exploring the area. The town lies at the foot of the Sleeping Beauty Mountain peak.
History: The history of the town began with the purchase of the land for a Dutch Reformed church and parish, and later was named after Harry Rivers, the Swellendam civil commissioner of the time.
Arts & Culture: Places of cultural interest include the Julius Gordon Africana Centre in Versfeld House which houses art by well-known South African artists and has an antique collection. The town is home to historic houses including that of CJ Langenhoven and the historic farmhouse at Zeekoeigat. Through the years many artists and writers have enriched the cultural life of Riversdale and some of these notable figures include JAE Volschenk, SV Petersen and Dalene Matthee. Other places of interest are the old power station, the unique water purification plant and the old prison built in 1859.
Science & Nature: A botanical garden at Jurisch Park, started by Captain PKK Jurisch in 1926, is interesting as it has two sections, one dedicated to exotic species and the other for indigenous plants including aloes and vygies.
Entertainment: Garcia Pass with its historic Tollhouse, is the starting point of four fascinating hiking trails through the Langeberg, where the abundant fynbos can be seen.
Sport: Riversdale has excellent sporting facilities that include those for rugby, soccer, tennis and shooting. There is an attractive golf course for the traveller who remembers to bring clubs.
