Geography: The picturesque town of Tulbagh, known for its heritage and historical homesteads, is situated 130km northeast of Cape Town on Route 62.
History: Originally starting out as a strong Dutch Reformed farming community, the area was eventually laid out in 1795 and named after the Cape Governor Ryk Tulbagh. The town was completely flattened by an earthquake in 1969, and a massive restoration project has meant that many of the fine old buildings have now been returned to their original glory.
Arts and Culture: Tulbagh is a museum buff's dream come true! Its cultural heritage is encompassed in the museums at the Dutch Reformed Church and the Old Drostdy, as well as other restored national monuments open to the public in Church Street. Wine estates of the area include Drostdy, Twee Jonge Gezellen and Montpellier.
Science and Nature: Tulbagh lies directly on a geological fault line, and tremors are felt when the line comes under seismic pressure. The town also lies in a beautiful and fertile valley which has helped it become a centre of premiere winemaking and other fruit farming.
Entertainment: Visitors can take a train ride through the scenic Nuwe Kloof Pass or attend the annual Agricultural, Horse and Wild Flower Show in September.
Sport: For the outdoor enthusiast Tulbagh offers hiking, mountain biking, horse-riding and 4x4 trails, as well as excellent fishing opportunities.
Did you know? Church Street has the largest collection of provincial heritage sites in one street in South Africa. There are thirty-two!
