Geography: The quaint fishing village of Velddrif is centrally situated on the West Coast of South Africa, about 2km upstream from where the Berg River flows into the sea at the Bay of St Helena. A typical drive from Cape Town on the R27 highway should take no longer than 90 minutes.

History: The name "Velddrif" came about when Theunis Smit, a local farmer, drove his sheep through the "drift in the veld" across the Berg River in search of greener grazing. A pont was built in 1899, in order for both animals and people to cross the river, while later on in 1950 a bridge replaced the original structure. At the crossing a blacksmith , store and hotel were established, and by 1960 Velddrif had achieved municipal status. The area is an important fishing one, and is also a major salt producer. The modern town of Velddrif is currently finding favour with developers, and the potential of this beautiful part of the West Coast is beginning to be reached at the luxurious Port Owen Marina, which is a popular holiday and weekend resort.

Arts and Culture: Travellers who are interested in the arts and culture of the area, can visit the West Coast Gallery in the heart of Velddrif, where over 100 artists and craftsmen from the region are represented. The only reed maze in South Africa can be found here.

Science and Nature: The West Coast region of the Western Cape province is home to spectacular examples of the beauty of nature, and a short distance from Velddrif lies the Rocher Pan Nature Reserve. The freshwater lake is home to many species of bird, animals and plants, and tourists can get great views of the colourful flamingos and pelicans by taking one of the regular boat trips that go up the river. This is truly one of the finest birding experiences along the West Coast. Velddrif is an ideal base from which to explore the West Coast, and enjoy the wonderful settings complete with birds, fishing and wild flowers.

Entertainment: Although on the exterior the town of Velddrif seems remote and quiet, there is plenty of activity to keep everybody entertained. The town is part of the Crayfish Route, which means that dining out at a local seafood restaurant gives one the chance to sample some of the finest seafood delicacies around. The warm hospitality of the locals rounds off the experience. Owing to its mild Mediterranean climate, the town offers year round holidaying opportunities, and one of the most well known activities is to simply unwind, relax and take in the beauty of nature. Watch whales come into the bay to calve, enjoy the seasonal wild flower displays flowers, and sip a warm beverage in one of the town's coffee shops or visit an art gallery. Whatever it is you choose to do, just relax!

Sport: Water sports are very popular along the West Coast, and at Velddrif, owing to a deep water marina, ocean going yachts can safely moor here. Other water sport activities include excellent fishing from rock and boat, as well as great sailing and windsurfing opportunities.
