Geography: Nestling at the foot of Groenberg and the majestic Hawequa Mountains, lies the picturesque town of Wellington is a mere 72km drive from Cape Town.
History: Originally known as Limiet Valley (border or frontier valley), the area became known as Wagenmakersvallei (Valley of the Wagonmaker) towards the end of the 17th century. The name was changed in 1840 to Wellington in honour of the Duke of Wellington, the soldier and conqueror of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo.
Arts and Culture: Wellington is a rich cultural, religious and educational centre. Fine cuisine, magnificent historic buildings and architectural treasures can be discovered in the town. The Wellington Museum has wonderful exhibitions relating to the history of the town, the various cultures found in the area, Stone Age artefacts, and a major collection of Egyptian artefacts and exhibits of various pioneers who made their mark. The old Dutch Reformed Church and the statue of Dr. Andrew Murray date back to the 1840's. A real gem for the cultural sightseer is Ouma Granny's House; a beautiful little Victorian house with a unique and priceless collection.
Science and Nature: Due to the excellent soils and climate of the region, many of South Africa's vine-cutting nurseries are found in the Wellington area.
Entertainment: Visitors can experience the local fynbos, olive orchards and vineyards, while stopping to taste some of the local produce on one of the guided horse-riding trails. A fascinating historic walk through the town is also great family entertainment.
Sport: Wellington offers ample sporting facilities. The Boland Stadium, administrative headquarters of the Boland Rugby Union, an excellent golf course and swimming pools are to be found. Those visitors keen on mountain biking can take up the challenge of a trail which runs past five guest facilities through the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains and offers spectacular views over the Berg River Valley.
