Geography: The tranquil seaside village of Yzerfontein, with its unspoilt, pristine beaches is 85km north of Cape Town on the R27.
History: Starting life in 1936, the village was named after a spring rising on an ironstone formation about 3km inland.

Science & Nature: The main attractions of the town are ecotourism based and include excellent whale and birdwatching, while nearby Dassen Island is renowned for its colony of African penguins. An interesting site is the two beehive-shaped lime furnaces built in the 1940s to produce building lime from seashells and black mussel shells.
