Geography: The twin towns of Mmabatho and Mafikeng lie northwest of Lichtenburg.
History: Mafikeng and Mmabatho were once separate towns, but have merged together to form the Mafikeng municipal area. They are about 5km apart. Early Barolong chiefs who had settled along the Molopo River called it Mahikeng or "The place among the rocks". This was in 1852 after the upheaval of the intertribal war known as the "Difequane". Later in the midst of the South African (Anglo-Boer) War the town attracted the attention of the world when the small British garrison under the command of Colonel Baden Powell held out for 217 days against Boer forces who had surrounded the town. Today however, Mafikeng is a provincial and commercial capital and an interesting tourism destination.
Arts and Culture: The history of Mafikeng is quite fascinating and tourists to this area will enjoy the many monuments and museums. The Mafikeng Museum has wonderful ethnographic and South African (Anglo-Boer) War exhibits while at Kanon Kopje, southeast of Mafikeng, visitors can see the defensive fort built during the Warren Expedition of 1885. Mafikeng is closely linked to the famous South African writer Sol Plaatjie and some sites that show this link include his residence, his newspaper office and printing works.
Science and Nature: The area surrounding Mafikeng-Mmabatho is well known for its flora and fauna. The 4,600ha Mafikeng Game Reserve is home to a wide variety of game as well as being a breeding park for White Rhino while The Manyane Game Lodge features a lion enclosure and crocodile camp. Another great spot for game viewing is the Botsalano Game Reserve about 30 km west of the city. The bird sanctuary at Cookes Lake near the entrance to the town also offers caravan and picnic sites while The Scout Centre of Excellence for Nature & Environment is located on the borders of the Mafikeng Game Reserve.
Entertainment: The principal tourist information office is located at the entrance to Mafikeng on the road to Lichtenburg. The visitor to Mafikeng-Mmabatho will not be bored as there are many entertaining attractions to see. At the Mmabana Cultural Centre, which promotes music and artistic disciplines, visitors can attend numerous workshops and exhibitions. The Mmabatho Conference Centre, which can host up to 6,000 delegates also has a world-famous recording studio which has been used to produce the soundtrack for films such as 'Lion King'. If you want to throw dice then the casino located at the Tusk Mmabatho Casino Resort will provide all the entertainment. If you'd like to get out into the fresh air however then the nearby Modimola Dam is great for angling and weekend picnicking.
Sport: For the sports enthusiast there are two golf courses: the Leopard Park Golf Club, located in the western suburbs and the Mafikeng Golf Club.
