Geography: Situated along the lower reaches of the Fish River, this is the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere, and reputedly the second largest in the world after the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA. The Canyon is 161km long and drops vertically by 500m <|#150> the drop is sudden and without warning and if you weren't looking for the Canyon you would hardly know it is there! The Ai-Ais hot springs are at the southern end of the Fish River Canyon.

History: Carved throughout millenia by water erosion, and possibly helped along by the collapse of the valley floor after movements in the earth's crust, the Canyon is breathtaking in its immensity.

Sport: The very popular 5-day, 86km hike along the base of the Canyon is not for the faint-hearted. There are absolutely no facilities and you have to carry everything with you. Hiking in the cooler winter months is most advisable and permits must be obtained from Namibia Wildlife Resorts in Windhoek.
