Geograph: Keetmanshoop lies on the B4, about 500 km south of Windhoek.
Hitory: The town was originally founded as a mission station in 1866 and was named after the German trader Johann Keetman who supported the mission financially.
Arts & Culture: Visitors to Keetmanshoop can check out the worthwhile museum, housed in an old church, exhibiting the history of the town. Also of interest is the "Kaiserliche Postamt" built in 1910, which now houses the Tourist Information Centre. Although it was the goal of the Rhenish Mission Society to spread their faith and language to the local Namas, it is lucky that some Namas retained their traditions of storytelling, poetry and prose.
Science & Nature: Visitors to the town can visit the Kokerboom Forest, about 13km away to the northeast on the farm Gariganus. The site has been declared a National Monument and the unique sight is both eerie and fascinating and is the subject of many photographers' compositions. These trees are succulents and are known to reach a height of up to 9 metres! The tree only blossoms for the first time after 20 to 30 years and can reach 300 years of age.
Entertainment: Visitors to Keetmanshoop can enjoy dining in one of the hotels, or just sitting and relaxing in a pub or coffee shop.
Sport: The 70 year old Keetmanshoop Golf Course has a new clubhouse and best of all no booking is necessary for a round!
Did you know? The language of the Namas, although still spoken, is on UNESCO's list of "Languages in Danger of Disappearing".
