Geography: The Waterberg Plateau, at 1,878m above sea level and towering 400m above the surrounding plains, dominates the landscape of this 41,000ha park.
History: The rich history of the area begins in the rock stratum, said to be 850-million years old. Dinosaurs left their tracks here 200-million years ago and the area was inhabited first by the San, whose rock engravings are believed to be several thousand years old. A small band of San still occupied this area until the late 1960's. A major turning point in the story of Namibia and its people occured in the foothills of the Waterberg when the Herero people faught and lost their greatest battle against German Colonial forces at the beginning of the 20th century.
Science & Nature: Declared a reserve in 1972, the largely inaccessible Plateau has become the breeding nucleus for Namibia's endangered species.
