Geography: Benoni is situated in the East Rand of Gauteng, about 30km from Johannesburg along the N17.
History: The name of Benoni has a biblical reference, as Ben-Oni or "son of my sorrow" is mentioned in the book of Genesis. It was named as such because the surveyor of the piece of land, Johan Rissik, struggled to do the survey. Gold was discovered on the land in 1887 and Benoni was declared a gold-bearing farm. The first residential stands were sold in 1904 and today Benoni is a centre of heavy industry and manufacturing.
Arts and Culture: Visitors to Benoni can take in a bit of history and culture of the town at the Benoni Museum, while one of the windows in the St Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church will be of particular interest. On close inspection of the window there appears to be a stain that is a close resemblance of the Crucifixion.
Science and Nature: Benoni has five man-made lakes and more than 30 parks. One of these is the Korsman Bird Sanctuary, which houses about 250 species, and a few roaming antelope.
Entertainment: Great entertainment for kids is a visit to the Bunny Park, where they can play with hundreds of bunnies, sheep and listen to the birds in the trees. Visitors looking for a fun-filled event can take the Benoni Lake Express - a vintage steam train that takes passengers from Johannesburg Station to the Northmead Station next to Danie Taljaard Park. The park is a great spot for picnicking, braaing and relaxing. In town, visitors can enjoy the excellent shopping centres, as well as a monthly flea market selling all types of arts and crafts.
Sport: There are excellent sport facilities at Willowmore Park where many international cricket matches have been played. Water sports at the many dams prove to be very popular with people from all over the area.
Did You Know? Oscar Award winner Charlize Theron hails from Benoni. She won the Best Actress Oscar for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the film "Monster".
