Geography: The friendly town of Empangeni is situated in the Mpangeni Valley about 3km west of the N2 on the R34.
History: The town has its origins in the Norwegian Missionary Society that established a mission station here in 1851 on the banks of the Mpangeni River. The river was so called because of the profusion of Mpange trees growing along its banks. While some claim that Empangeni is named after the river, others believe that the name comes from the Zulu word empanga which means "to grab" and it refers to the avoidance of disputes over land ownership. Today Empangeni is the commercial and industrial centre of an area that produces a great amount of sugar cane.
Arts and Culture: Visitors to Empangeni can drop in at the Art and Crafts Centre and purchase a variety of arts and crafts made by the local communities. The Empangeni Art and Cultural Museum has fascinating temporary exhibitions, as well as a permanent display of Zulu heritage art. The Harrison Collection belonged to the pioneer sugar farmer and is now in the museum. Visitors can see the site of an early American mission station at Inkanyesi, while the excellent selection of Zulu curios and artefacts made by the mobility impaired can be bought at Jabulani Crafts.
Science and Nature: The area around Empangeni is a fertile land with rolling green hills covered in sugar cane and forests. The Enseleni Game Reserve, which covers some 295ha, will attract tourists interested in wildlife and beautiful mangroves. The name Enseleni means 'lair of the badger' in isiZulu.
Entertainment: The Nayala and Mfuli Ranches offer nature trails, while at the Felix Mill visitors can wander through the small village with its large sugar mill.
Sport: For the traveller who is a sports enthusiast the facilities at the Empangeni Country Club will be of interest. Set in beautiful surroundings, the club offers tennis, golf, bowls and squash.
Did You Know? The campus of the University of Zululand is about 12km southwest of Empangeni.
