Geography: Situated 80m above sea level in a lush green belt, the pretty little town of Melmoth lies about halfway between Eshowe and Mahlabatini in the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal's Drakensberg Mountain Range.

History: The history of Melmoth is tied up with the British annexation of Zululand in the 1880's, when numerous magistracies were established. One of these would be named after the resident Commissioner and Chief Magistrate of the country, a certain Sir Melmoth Osborn. It was later discovered that the high altitude of the village was perfect for growing trees, and in 1926 a factory was established to process the bark of the wattle trees to make a tanning extract. Today, the well established trading and agricultural centre of Melmoth is still a busy trading centre for an industrious timber industry, as well as for tanning extracts and paper-making material.

Arts and Culture: Visitors to Melmoth who are interested in things cultural can see numerous monuments and memorials including the Biyela Monument, which shows that this area is the origin of the Biyela clan; the Kwa Magwaza Mission Station which was established by the late Reverend Robert Robertson; and the Mthonjaneni Site, where numerous pre-battle meetings between various groups including the British, the Voortrekkers and the Zulus took place. A real highlight of the area is a visit to Simunye, an authentic Zulu cultural village, where visitors can experience the daily lifestyles of the Zulu people.

Science and Nature: The Drakensberg area is truly magnificent and nature is certainly at her finest here. From Melmoth travellers can enjoy the outdoors, and view spectacular natural phenomenon. The surrounding areas of Melmoth embrace one of the largest conservancies in KwaZulu-Natal, and a major bird sanctuary. For bird lovers, the Zululand Birding Route, the first of its kind in South Africa, takes visitors through 200km of rolling hills and lush forests, and encompasses 10 different habitat species. It is believed that the route supports 400 bird species, half of the total indigenous South African bird species!

Sport: Outdoor sport enthusiasts have always enjoyed this part of KwaZulu-Natal for its incredible variety of outdoor sporting options. Whether you go hiking, mountain biking or horse-riding, the Berg is always exciting and inspiring. For those travellers who have a passion for golf, there is a course at the Melmoth Golf Club in Golf Street.

Did You Know? Melmoth the Wanderer, by Irish writer Charles Robert Maturin is one of the finest Gothic novels written. Maturin was Oscar Wilde's great-uncle.
