Geography: White River, the pretty floral gateway to the Lowveld lies about 20km north of Nelspruit.
History: The village lies on the White River, a tributary of the Crocodile River, with the name being a translation of the Swazi emanzimhlope, which means "white waters". The first farmers moved into the area in the 1880's and the farming community that settled here after the South African (Anglo-Boer) War has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Today there are more than 2,500 small farms producing mainly citrus and subtopical fruits. White River is a popular holiday destination.
Art and Culture: The town has its own Country Roads Arts and Crafts Route, and visitors can buy arts, crafts and curios from some of the biggest curio stores in the country, while the Orange Winery makes for an interesting visit. 2km out of town on the Plaston road is the Anglican Church of St George's, a good example of early Lowveld architecture.
Science and Nature: White River, gateway to the Lowveld, is known for its 'perfect' climate, colourful flora and scenic beauty, and is an important farming and tourism centre. It is a good base for exploring the Kruger National Park and the various other natural wonders in the area. The Lowveld National Botanic Gardens is on the R40 towards Nelspruit and should not be missed as it houses a superb collection of ferns, cycads and aloes. Of particular interest is Legogote Mountain, often regarded as the landmark of White River and although there are numerous derivations of its name like 'the place of skins', 'the klipspringer' and 'the rock leans over', it is commonly referred to as Lion's Head, apparent from a specific angle.
Entertainment: Visitors to White River can enjoy local stage productions at The Barnyard Theatre, while at the Ijabula Boma, a unique dining experience in an African boma can be enjoyed.
Sport: For the traveller who brought clubs, the White River Golf Club is a challenging course.
Did You Know? The popular Mineola citrus fruit is a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit.
